Support & Resistance with Patterns
Learn how candlestick patterns interact with support and resistance levels for the highest-probability setups.
Support & Resistance with Patterns
When a candlestick pattern forms at a key support or resistance level, the probability of a successful trade increases dramatically. This confluence -- the intersection of a level and a pattern -- is where the most reliable setups live.
Why Levels and Patterns Together
Support and resistance tell you WHERE to pay attention. Candlestick patterns tell you WHAT is happening. Together, they tell you WHERE something important is happening and WHAT it means. A bullish hammer AT a support level means buyers stepped in at the exact place where they have stepped in before. That is high-probability.
Identifying Key Levels
Horizontal support/resistance: Prices where the market previously reversed. More tests = more significant.
Psychological round numbers: Markets respect round numbers (50, 100, 1000).
Previous day's high/low: Critical for intraday traders.
Swing highs/lows: Natural S/R from price structure.
Gap levels: Unfilled gaps create S/R zones.
Patterns at Support
Strongest signals: Hammer at support, Bullish engulfing at support, Morning star at support, Doji at support (with confirmation), Tweezer bottom at support.
Patterns at Resistance
Strongest signals: Shooting star at resistance, Bearish engulfing at resistance, Evening star at resistance.
The Flip: Support Becomes Resistance
When support breaks, it becomes resistance (and vice versa). If a bearish pattern forms at a former support level during a retest, you have an exceptionally strong short setup.
The Confluence Stack
Multiple levels converging at the same price create "super levels." Horizontal support + 200-day MA + Fibonacci 61.8% retracement = triple confluence. A pattern at triple confluence is one of the strongest possible signals.
Practical Application
> Key Takeaway: Candlestick patterns are most reliable at key support and resistance levels. Make it a rule to only trade patterns at levels, and your win rate will improve substantially.
